Why you must NEVER share a verification code |
||
|
Most email and social media users now know that one of the best ways to keep your on-line accounts secure, is to set up Two-Step Verification (sometimes called Two Factor or Multi Factor Authentication). Scammers know this and are increasingly targeting people across Devon and Cornwall by tricking them into sharing their verification codes. Here’s how to avoid falling for those tricks:
1. Your verification code is YOUR final security barrier A scammer may already have your password, maybe from a previous data breach, especially if you have used the same password across multiple on-line accounts (never do that). Or maybe by successfully guessing it using personal information they already have about you, perhaps from a CV you completed in the past. If they have your password then often the only thing stopping them accessing your account is the verification code that normally gets sent to your mobile phone, particularly when a login attempt is detected from a new device or a new location. ➡️ If you are tricked into sharing that code, you are letting a scammer in to your account.
2. Always remember, real organisations will NEVER ask you for it No legitimate bank, government department, organisation or employer / potential employer will ask you to share a verification code. They may claim it’s to “verify your identity” or “process your application” — but in reality, they are trying to access your account.
3. You could be instantly locked out of your account If a scammer gets your verification code they could then: ➡️ This can lock you out of your account within seconds
The Golden Rule Treat your verification code like your PIN or Password — it is FOR YOUR EYES ONLY If anyone asks for it, no matter how urgent or convincing they sound, the answer is always: 👉 “NO.”
